I touched upon this in yesterdays article

That all core is not the same

And its something we really have to get our heads into in the battle to keep bowlers on the park

So first up there is the traditional method of core training

Which has been done for years, and is done in most other sports

Its where the guys are doing their basic lifts, squat, deadlift, bench etc and that the S&C say that this will make the trunk strong

And then at the end of the session they will throw some more ‘core’ exercises in their

You know the one- crunches, Russian twists, leg raises and the ‘ab’ ones

Let me say this now so it does get twisted.

There is nothing wrong with these at all

In every exercise you will find some benefit when fitted to the right player

But what these drills wont do is help protect the spine when bowling

For that you need to access the reactive core, or inner core

This is the core that we need to be switching on subconsciously

Almost like when you sneeze and certain muscles kick in

We need that to be happening when bowling too

And the normal abs workout wont take care of this

For this we need to get primal, go back to basics

Like we’ve said before, look at the patterns that we first used when learning to move as a baby

Get the diaphragm working, make sure the rolling patterns are activating the slings as they should, that you’ve got control on sliding in a quadrupled position

Get out of the sagittal plane, mix up the training, get unstable, let the reactive trunk wake up and start working again

The TVA, multifidus, obliques, diaphragm,  all working as they should

When this happens then then body starts to work as it should

Those areas of tightness we see all too often, like the upper back hips and ankles start to loosen off again

And bang, your on the park and bowling quick

At the end of the day that’s all we want

Think differently
